Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in the UK, accounting for almost a quarter of male cancers. Each year, nearly 35,000 men are diagnosed and more than 10,000 die from the disease.

Men over fifty may develop early prostate cancer which is still at the curable stage. A simple blood test could indicate the signs of early changes.

More than 1200 tests have been carried out at the Castle Hall in Bridgnorth since 2009. In this time more than thirty local men have been found to have prostate cancer. Prior to the test they had no symptoms of any kind and are now receiving treatment.

Bridgnorth Lions carry out this event annually which takes place in October/November. Please check the forthcoming events page and local newspapers for details. It is important that the test is carried out annually on men over the age of 50.

583 men attended the prostate cancer screening event in Bridgnorth on October 31st 2011. This is believed to be the largest number ever recorded in a single session.

David Baxter-Smith, consultant urologist, said: "The men of Bridgnorth obviously realize the importance of the test. The work done by the Lions in organizing the event has paid dividends with this size of attendance. It was a fantastic night. As a result more men will have the opportunity to know whether they are likely to to be impacted by this terrible disease which kills 10,000 each year in the UK.".

All 583 men should now have received the results of their blood test in a letter from Dr Baxter-Smith. 48 of these men showed higher than normal levels of P.S.A in their blood. These men have all been advised to seek further advice from their doctor in the letter they received.
